Stocking the Kitchen: Grocery Shopping in Wine Country
One of the best reasons to book a house instead of a hotel here is the kitchen. You’re surrounded by some of the best farmland in the country, there’s a fish market that gets deliveries off the coast, and you can buy a piece of cheese from a woman who’s been a cheese monger for twenty years and will tell you exactly what to pair it with.
The mistake people make is doing one big shop at the chain store and calling it done. You can absolutely do that — and sometimes you should — but you’ll have missed the whole point. Also a lot of the big shops offer curbside pick-up or delivery so you can avoid the store entirely.
Here’s how I’d handle it.
The big shop
New Seasons Market, Tualatin
7703 SW Nyberg St · Open daily 7 AM–11 PM
Not in wine country — it’s in Tualatin, off I-5 — but if you’re driving in from Portland, it’s directly on your route and worth the detour. It’s akin to Whole Foods. Excellent produce, a strong deli and prepared foods counter, good bread, and real depth on gluten-free, dairy-free, and specialty items. Stock up here before you’re past Sherwood and you’ll arrive with the hard part done.
Fred Meyer, Newberg
3300 E Portland Rd · Open daily 6 AM–11 PM
This is your everything store and a chain of Kroger’s. It once offered more boutique grocery options, it’s now become pretty streamline and anywhere USA, but you can get what you need here: groceries, wine, beer, pharmacy, and the odd thing you forgot to pack. Open until 11, which matters when you land late or realize at nine o’clock that the house has no coffee filters. If you’re doing one stop and want it over with, do it here.
The specialty stops
This is where a house rental starts earning its keep.
Northwest Fresh Seafood Company, Newberg
611 N Main St · Mon–Sat 10 AM–6 PM · Closed Sunday
The single best reason to cook while you’re here. Salmon, halibut, ling cod, oysters, whole crab — everything fresh, clearly priced, and packed on ice for the drive. The staff will do custom cuts and skin removal, and they take pre-orders. Come earlier in the day if you want salmon; the good stuff goes.
Ray’s Produce, Newberg
205 N Main St · Daily 8 AM–8 PM · Seasonal — call ahead in winter
A block down from the fish market, and where locals actually buy produce, especially local fruit that’s in season. While the big box stores are trucking in produce from a state away, Ray’s suppliers are local farmers and growers. Prices genuinely beat the grocery stores. Worth calling before you drive over in the off-season.
Good Company Cheese, Newberg
602 E 1st St · Tue–Sat 11 AM–5 PM · Closed Sun–Mon
One of only a handful of independent cheese shops in Oregon. Kristen has been a cheesemonger for nearly two decades — tell her what you’re drinking and she’ll build the board. Charcuterie, jams, crackers, and a wine wall with bottles you won’t find elsewhere in town.
Gusto Gastronomia Italiana, Newberg
901-B Brutscher St · Closed Tuesday, otherwise 10 AM–7 PM
Italian deli with house-made sauces, fresh pasta, cured meats, panini, focaccia, and cannoli. If you want one easy dinner that requires almost nothing of you, buy a sauce and some pasta here.
Harvest Fresh Grocery & Deli, McMinnville
251 NE 3rd St · Mon–Sat 8 AM–7 PM, Sun 10 AM–7 PM
Right on Third Street, and the most useful stop if you’re staying in McMinnville. Natural foods grocery with a deli, coffee, bulk section, and a lot of specialty items you won’t find at the chains. Walkable from most of downtown.
Natural Grocers, McMinnville
448 NE Hwy 99W · Open daily, roughly 8:30 AM–8:30 PM
All-organic produce, a deep gluten-free selection, and a lot of specialty and health-focused items the chains don’t carry. There’s also an unusually good meat case — bison, elk, venison — if someone in your group wants to cook something more interesting than chicken. Right on 99W, easy to hit on the way in or out of Mac.
Red Hills Market, Dundee
155 SW 7th St · Daily 8 AM–8 PM
Half restaurant, half gourmet market. Artisan meats and cheeses, pantry goods, a strong wine selection to take away, and pizzas you can order to go. Ideal for the night nobody wants to cook but nobody wants to go out either.
How I’d actually plan it
Day one: Big shop on the way in — New Seasons or Whole Foods if you’re coming from Portland, Fred Meyer if you’re already here. Basics, breakfast, coffee, snacks. Fred Meyer’s offers local delivery so you can avoid the grocery store entirely.
Day two: Do the Newberg run. Ray’s, Northwest Fresh Seafood, and Good Company are all within a few blocks of each other on Main and First. That’s dinner sorted, and it’s genuinely a nice half hour.
If you’re based in McMinnville: Harvest Fresh and Natural Grocers cover most of what you need without leaving town. Save the Newberg trip for the fish and the cheese, which are worth the drive.
The lazy night: Red Hills Market pizza, or a deli container of cacio de pepe, fresh noodles and focaccia from Gusto.
Things to know
Sunday is thin. Northwest Fresh Seafood and Good Company Cheese are both closed. Fred Meyer, Harvest Fresh, Natural Grocers, and Red Hills Market are open. Plan your seafood dinner for Saturday.
Tuesday catches people too — Gusto is closed.
Ray’s is seasonal. Call before you go if you’re here outside the growing season.
Farmers markets are worth building around if your dates line up. McMinnville’s runs Thursdays in season, and it’s where several of the chefs on this site shop. Newberg has a Wednesday market during the summer and early autumn.
