Shoemates opened in 2013 as a shoe and leather repair shop, with the hope of growing into retail. It did. New manufacturer lines have been added every year since, and people now drive from the west valley and the Oregon coast for the repair work alone.
The brand list is genuinely deep for a town this size: Birkenstock, Red Wing, Keen, Clarks, ECCO, Dansko, Taos, Naot, SAS, Redback Boots, Sofft, Haflinger, Sanita, Born, Spring Step, Superfeet, plus Brooks running shoes and hiking, work, and dress footwear alongside them. Socks are a specialty too — Sockwell and Fits in American merino and bamboo, compression, hiking, and work weights.
Here, they talk to you, measure your feet, hear what you’re after, and find the shoes that actually fit. No buying, trying, returning, and waiting for the next pair. You leave with the right size that day.
The repair side is what makes the retail side make sense. The brands they carry are built to be resoled, and repairmen Mel and Jim turn work around quickly at prices that let people keep old favorites rather than replace them.
There’s a second location in downtown McMinnville on Third Street that also does repairs.
Practically speaking: if you’ve walked more of wine country than you planned, or the boots you brought aren’t up to a gravel driveway, this is the fix.
