Domaine Roy & Fils

In 1991, Michael Etzel and Robert Roy founded Beaux Frères in what is now the Ribbon Ridge AVA, with Etzel’s brother-in-law Robert Parker Jr. as an investor. Their sons, Jared Etzel and Marc-André Roy, grew up around it and had been friends for twenty years when they decided to build something of their own.

They founded Domaine Roy & fils in 2012. Jared had honed his craft in Spain and California before a property brought him home — a former hazelnut farm on the rise of Worden Hill, seven miles from where their fathers started, on volcanic soils and basalt rock. They planted it in 2013 and named it Iron Filbert Vineyard, for what grew there before. The winery now sits on that same parcel, which means the fruit is grown and vinified in the same place.

The estate spans 42 acres across two sites: Iron Filbert in the Dundee Hills and Quartz Acorn in Yamhill-Carlton. Thirty-two acres are Pinot Noir across ten clones planted at high density, ten are Chardonnay. Farming is organic, with an ongoing program of soil health work and clonal selection.

The house style favors elegance over power. The Willamette Valley Pinot Noir — the only bottling drawing on both estates — sees fifteen days of maceration and ten months on the lees in barriques, just ten percent new oak.

Since 2023 the winery has been guided by the Frescobaldi family, whose winemaking history in Tuscany runs more than seven hundred years.

The tasting room sits on Worden Hill Road with panoramic views across the Dundee Hills, approached through transplanted thirty-year-old olive trees. Private hosted tastings are the standard, with caviar and Champagne service available.
