A family-owned estate high in the Dundee Hills, planted in 1990 by owner and winemaker Michael Mega, who bought a parcel of old orchards on the conviction that the site could grow world-class Pinot Noir. The name comes from Greek mythology — Nysa, the hidden fruit-rich land where the young Dionysus was raised.
The vineyard sits between roughly 600 and 750 feet on volcanic Jory soil with basalt bedrock eight to twelve feet down, across 42 acres with about 20 under vine. Vines are dry-farmed on their own roots and densely spaced, planted to Pommard, Wädenswil, and Dijon 115. The eastern aspect and elevation produce a long ripening season and strong acid retention; the site is slowly succumbing to phylloxera, which concentrates the fruit further. Farming is organic.
For years Nysa was known primarily as a source, supplying Pinot Noir to acclaimed producers across the Willamette Valley. Mega made his first estate vintage in 2004. Winemaking is minimalist, with no fining or filtering at bottling. The defining practice is what Mega calls patient cellaring: wines are held back for years so guests taste bottles already showing secondary development. The range now includes Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, sparkling Blanc de Noir, Rosé, Marsanne, and a Grenache.
Yes. Tastings are by appointment, and the room is small. Current releases of sparkling, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir, alongside library wines. Older vintages are poured as a matter of course. Almost every tasting room here pours young wine. Tasting aged Pinot alongside current vintages is the fastest way to understand what these wines become. A small boutique property with a modest patio and excellent views. Not a commercial-scale operation, and that’s the appeal. The approach is a steep unpaved hill.
