Woodshed Wine Company

The vineyard was planted in 1978 by Jim McDaniel, with design guidance from David Lett and vines sourced from Dick Erath. That’s both founding fathers of Oregon Pinot on one hillside, which makes this among the more historically significant sites in the Dundee Hills.

Mike and Robin Murto bought it in 1991, renamed it Murto Vineyard, expanded it, and farmed it for more than 25 years. Fruit went to Winderlea, White Rose Estate, Ayoub, and Belle Pente as single-vineyard Murto releases, which built a devoted following among people who pay attention to vineyard names on labels.

That following is what brought Anthony and Lindsay Van Nice here. They bought the 26-acre property in 2018, transitioned it to organic farming, and founded Woodshed Wine Company. They live on the site.

Anthony’s career is unusual for someone now making ten barrels at a time. He was the first hire and general manager at The Four Graces, growing it from inception through its sale to Foley, then served as president of Solena Estates before establishing his own private-label winemaking business. Across thirty years his wines have earned hundreds of 90-plus point scores.

The wines here are micro-lot: Old Vine Pinot Noir from the 1978 plantings, an Estate Pinot blending 1992 own-rooted Pommard and Wädenswil with old-vine fruit, plus Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from neighboring Thirsty Boots Vineyard and a sparkling. The Estate Pinot ages ten months in French oak from the Tronçais forest and runs ten barrels total. One recent bottling took 97 points and Editor’s Choice from the International Wine Report. New releases and library wines go out twice a year, allocation list only.

The tasting shed is new, small, and deliberately designed — modern rustic, turntables and vinyl, floor-to-ceiling glass over vines approaching fifty years old. Lindsay curates The Store at Woodshed inside it. Anthony frequently hosts, which means you’re often sitting across from the winemaker.
