A 67-acre boutique hop farm and brewery in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, operating on the site of the former Crowing Hen Brewing. Owner Shelly Bigley, who spent decades in the Portland brewing scene, purchased the property and reopened it as Root & Rye. Securing a farm brewery permit by planting and trellising 15 acres of hops — a substantial expansion from the single acre the previous owners had established.
The 5-barrel brewhouse produces a rotating range of styles using estate-grown hops, with an emphasis on fresh-hop brewing. Taster trays are available. Food comes from a rotating pairing menu of small bites plus an on-site food cart. Non-alcoholic options include house made sodas spritzers and root beer.
The property has outdoor seating with heaters, lawn games for kids and adults, and views across surrounding vineyards and hazelnut groves. Families and dogs are welcome. Live music appears on the calendar seasonally.
Monday and Thursday 3–7:30, Friday 1–7:30, Saturday and Sunday 12–7:30. Closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Yes — a rotating small-bites menu and an on-site food cart. Very. Lawn games, open space, and non-alcoholic options for kids and non-drinkers. Yes. Yes — there’s a barn on the property open to the public and can be reserved for private events. Carlton, across from Abbey Road Farm. A little remote, which is part of the appeal. Come and enjoy our back yard with us, Cheers!
