A micro-boutique estate in the Dundee Hills, family-owned and women-led, founded by Sofia Torres McKay and Ryan McKay. Sofia grew up in Mexico City and worked in tech; Ryan is from Eugene. They met in San Francisco in 2001, married in 2005, and bought ten acres on Worden Hill Road in 2011, planting the first vines in 2012. Roughly six acres are Pinot Noir with just under an acre of Chardonnay, at 500 to 600 feet on red volcanic soil — the name is French for crimson, after the color of that ground and the wines it produces.
The vineyard is dry-farmed, organic, and biodynamic, following Rudolf Steiner’s principles. Sofia’s practices include hand-spraying concentrated chamomile tea during heat waves, which she describes as returning potassium the vines lose and acting as a natural sulfur against disease. Production runs roughly 800 to 1,000 cases a year: several Pinot Noirs, Chardonnay, Rosé of Pinot Noir, Blanc de Noirs, and a White Pinot. Ryan has pursued heritage clones not yet planted in the Willamette Valley, including clone 122 sourced from a Grand Cru site in Vosne-Romanée; from 25 original plants they’ve been propagating budwood to establish a one-acre block.
Sofia coined the term “vineyard steward” in 2014 for her wine labels, arguing it was the right title for the people tending Oregon’s vines. AHIVOY — the Asociación Hispana de la Industria del Vino en Oregon y Comunidad — adopted it in 2019, and she co-founded that organization to provide education and advancement for vineyard stewards statewide. She has served on the boards of the Dundee Hills Winegrowers Association and the Willamette Valley Wineries Association, and was appointed to a state advisory committee by Governor Kate Brown.
