Todd Hansen bought a property in the Chehalem Mountains in 2005 and started making wine from it in 2007. He learned viticulture first, then winemaking, picking both up along the way with help from people in the industry. All of the grapes are from Lia’s Vineyard, and many of the vines were planted more than thirty years ago.
The wines are Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, crafted in small lots, made with minimal handling to keep what he calls high fidelity to the source.
The music thread runs through everything. Longplay is a record reference, the typography is designed to look like a spinning disc, and there’s a record player on the label. Vinyl plays in the tasting room all day, and guests can request what goes on the turntable. The house line is analog wine for a digital world: no overdubbing, no remixing. His argument is that wine is like music — there are genres and styles, and “best” is more a question of taste than absolutes.
He ran a small tasting room in downtown Newberg for years, bought the industrial property in 2017, broke ground in May 2020, and finished the current building in 2021. It gave him space to make wine himself for the first time. Cedar planking on one wall was milled from stakes that used to stand in the vineyard.
The building looks industrial from outside and the wines are priced modestly, which surprises people. Older vintages get poured as part of the regular flight rather than held back as library pours — guests regularly report tasting ten-year-old Pinot and aged Chardonnay at standard rates. Todd often hosts himself.
Encouraged (especially on weekdays) but not required. Around $20, credited toward a bottle purchase. A complimentary cheese plate might be included if Todd has cheese on hand. Ask what older vintages are open. They pour aged Pinot and Chardonnay as part of the standard flight rather than charging library prices for it. Yes. There’s a substantial vinyl collection and guests are welcome to request what goes on. Lia’s Vineyard, in the Chehalem Mountains, with many vines over thirty years old. The vineyard was named after his daughter who was born in early 2006. Often. Todd hosts regularly. Reviewers keep making that point specifically — don’t let the setting fool you.
