Roots & Rye Brewery

A 67-acre boutique hop farm and brewery in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA, operating on the site of the former Crowing Hen Brewing. Owner Shelly Bigley, who spent decades in the Portland brewing scene, purchased the property from Michelle and Ryan Rhea and reopened it as Root & Rye. Securing a farm brewery permit required planting 15 acres of hop trellis — a substantial expansion from the single acre the previous owners had established — and Bigley kept the original operators running the business through the transition to avoid a gap in service.

The 5-barrel brewhouse produces a rotating range of styles using estate-grown hops, with an emphasis on fresh-hop brewing. Taster trays are available. Food comes from a rotating pairing menu of small bites plus an on-site food cart. Non-alcoholic options include house spritzers and an adult root beer.

The property has outdoor seating with heaters, lawn games for kids and adults, and views across surrounding vineyards and hazelnut groves. Families and dogs are welcome. Live music appears on the calendar seasonally.
