Ken Durant got interested in olive oil traveling through Europe. Penny liked growing things. In 2005 they planted 17 acres of olives where sheep and garlic had been.
It’s now the only commercial olive mill in Oregon and the largest olive grove in the state, across eight varieties. Nobody else here does this.
They press on site, which is the part that matters. Olive oil starts degrading the moment it’s milled, and most of what you buy has crossed an ocean and sat in a warehouse. Theirs hasn’t.
The tasting is a Blue Glass tasting, which is how professionals do it — the glass is colored so you can’t judge by appearance. You learn what extra virgin actually means, what defects taste like, and how to tell good from bad. Then small plates showing what good oil does to simple food.
They also make flavored oils, olive oil body care, and sell the estate wines alongside.
Fifty years of the family farming this hillside, five generations in the valley.
Late fall. Worth asking about milling days if you want to see it running.
