Lineage

Virginia Snowden came back to Oregon from Maui a few years before opening, wanting to be closer to family. She’d studied retail and apparel design, and once home she noticed Newberg was missing a particular kind of shop. So she built it.

Lineage opened May 2 on First Street — her father’s birthday. He died more than twenty years ago, and the store is named for him. Lineage means family. The elephant in the logo is his too; he collected all things elephant.

The building fits the theme. It’s a 1900s western false-front listed on the National Register of Historic Places, previously an insurance agency, and before that a toy store and a shoe store, according to customers who remember. The space has been passed down through Snowden’s family, so the shop’s history and the town’s are tangled together.

Inside, antiques sit alongside exposed pipes, deep red brick, and hardwood floors. The mix is deliberate — she’s said she loves the iron, the wood, and the brick, and that the combination makes things pop.

The buying leans contemporary with a boho-chic streak. You can pull together an entire wine country outfit here — shoes, jeans, tops, dresses — and the sizing runs generously, including plus sizes, which is rarer in boutiques than it should be. Alongside the clothing sit accessories, jewelry, high-end candles, bath and beauty, art prints, and a small but well-chosen home goods section. A good portion is locally sourced or handmade.

The service is what shows up in nearly every account: helpful without being pushy, and Snowden herself is often on the floor. Her line about it is that shopping should never be a chore.
