Incahoots

This is my favorite indoor plant shop in the valley. They have a great outdoor selection, but visiting this place in the winter warms your heart...if you're a plant person like me.

Incahoots opened as a small plant store in downtown McMinnville in 1974. It changed hands and locations several times before Ted and Harriet Gahr moved it to Baker Street in 1985. Two years later their daughter Janet Gahr and Brian Bailey bought it from them, and they’ve run it since.

Over five decades it has accumulated, in the owners’ own telling, from customer suggestions and their own whims. What started as plants now includes fresh cut flowers, garden plants and supplies, gifts, greeting cards, coffee and tea, books, music, imports, handmade jewelry, local art, candles, crystals, terrarium supplies, and holiday goods. There’s a tea and coffee bar, a children’s section, and plants inside and out.

The floral work is where the reputation sits. Customers describe calling from New Jersey or out of state with minimal detail and having exactly the right arrangement delivered. Amelia gets named repeatedly for that. You can also pick your own stems and have them arranged and wrapped on the spot, and the flowers reportedly last — one customer noted hers looked and smelled the same after two weeks.

They’ll also teach you. Plant care, pot selection, what will actually survive in your window. People go in for one thing and leave with tea, incense, and flowers.

Delivery covers McMinnville, Amity, Carlton, Dayton, Lafayette, and Yamhill.

Common questions

Is it just a florist?
No. Plants indoors and out, cut flowers, gifts, cards, jewelry, books, music, candles, crystals, terrarium supplies, local art, and a tea and coffee bar.

Can they do a custom arrangement?
Yes, and it’s what they’re known for. You can pick your own stems and have them arranged, or call ahead with an idea and let them run with it.

Do they deliver?
Yes — McMinnville, Amity, Carlton, Dayton, Lafayette, and Yamhill. Not Dundee, Newberg, Sheridan, Willamina, or Spirit Mountain.

Can they help with plant care?
Yes. Staff will talk you through what a plant needs and help you pick the right pot.

Is there coffee?
Yes, a tea and coffee bar with a well-regarded loose leaf selection.

Is it expensive?
Mid-range. One reviewer called it a bit pricey and attributed it to downtown McMinnville, though most find the value fair.

How long have they been there?

Since 1974, and in the same family since 1987.
