The Durant family came to this hillside in the late 1960s. Their history in the Willamette Valley now spans five generations and began with English walnuts, hazelnuts, Italian prunes, and cherries.

In 1973, Ken and Penny Durant were among the first families to attempt wine grapes in the Dundee Hills. Paul Durant remembers planting vines with his mother in spring, learning to harvest, and eventually teaching his own daughters to do both. There are photographs of Penny protecting baby vines with old milk cartons.

For decades they were growers rather than winemakers, selling premium fruit to wineries across the valley. The Durant label came later, produced in collaboration with respected Oregon wineries before winemaking finally came home to the estate.

Then came olives. Travels through Europe gave Ken a fascination with milling and olive oil production, and Penny’s passion for cultivation did the rest. In 2005 they planted a 17-acre olive grove where sheep and garlic had been. Durant Olive Mill is now the only commercial olive mill in Oregon and the state’s largest olive grove, across eight varieties.

The estate today covers more than 65 acres of wine grapes, the olive groves, and substantial natural space. Under the Red Ridge Farms name it also includes a specialty plant nursery, farm shop, gardens, overnight lodging, event spaces, a body care line, a kitchen, and the Durant Nature Trail. Native bee habitat is built into the farm — bare ground for ground-nesting species, bee hotels for cavity-nesters.

The tasting room sits on a well-placed overlook, with Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, and the Three Sisters visible on clear days. Wines are estate Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc.

The signature experience pairs both halves of the farm: a guided tour of the olive mill and grove, a traditional Blue Glass olive oil tasting explaining what extra virgin actually means and how to taste for quality, small plates showing what good oil does to simple food, and estate wines alongside comparing elevations, clones, and vintages.
