Kopitos Cocina

This is our favorite sit-down Mexican restaurant in Newberg and Dundee. Better to eat there as it doesn't travel as well as you'd like.

Sitting at the west end of First Street in downtown Newberg, and it’s the kind of place people get sent to by their tasting room hosts — which is usually the highest recommendation available around here.

The kitchen calls it a fusion born of love for two cultures, and that lands somewhere between traditional and modern Mexican. Tortillas are pressed by hand. Sauces are made from scratch. The tacos get the most attention — bacon and shrimp, New York steak, fish — but the menu runs deeper than that, with Dungeness crab tostadas, barbacoa, tamales, empanadas, poblano soup, and camarones a la diabla. Guacamole is made to order. Portions are generous enough that burritos routinely become two meals. There’s a solid range of gluten-free options, and the kitchen is accommodating about dietary needs.

The bar deserves its own paragraph. House margaritas include a Pinot Noir version and a cinnamon mezcal — the former being the most Willamette Valley thing on any Mexican menu in Oregon. There’s a full tequila and mezcal program, including flights, which arrive with the traditional accompaniments intact. Ask if you want the full explanation.

The room is contemporary and comfortable, casual enough for a taco lunch and polished enough for a date. Live music runs Thursday through Saturday. It’s family-owned, and the owners are usually in the building — several visitors mention community programming like Spanish conversation and art classes running out of the space.

One planning note: Kopitos is closed Sundays, which catches out a lot of weekend visitors. Build around it.
